Perth Amboy, N.J. Awarded Grants To Transform Scrap Into Green

The city of Perth Amboy has been awarded $7.1 million in grants from the state to convert a former scrap yard into a 6.1-acre public park that will include a performance space, skate park, bike course and spray ground.

Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bob Martin, Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz and Leigh Anne Hindenlang, executive director of the Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency, made the announcement in mid-September.

The brownfield site, which has been vacant for more than 30 years, will be transformed into a public park for the entire community by the fall of 2018.

The city has invested more than $17 million, including $1 million in federal grants, for the recovery of the waterfront after super storm Sandy. In the upcoming months, improvements will be made to Sadowski Parkway with the installation of five new adult tennis courts, fencing, lighting, public restrooms, volleyball courts, bleachers and a boat ramp.
