EPA Steps Up With Funds for Green Bay Multi-Use Property
Green Bay, Wis. redevelopment efforts are getting a big boost with a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The effort involves the Larsen Canning property in the city’s downtown. Historically, there had been a lot of old railroad tracks through the property with obvious environmental challenges, starting with the possible presence of arsenic, lead paint and asbestos. To address these issues, the city used EPA grant money to perform an assessment, which was a game-changer in redeveloping what is now called the Rail Yard into a multi-use tenant building.
EPA’s environmental remediation grants were instrumental in moving the effort from point A and beyond to end use fulfillment—avoiding costly demolition to transition the property to its new multi-use purpose.
The Rail Yard is not the only former brownfield in Green Bay that has benefited from EPA grant support. The Metreau Apartments, the KI Convention Center, the Hampton Inn, City Deck and City Deck Landing were all considered brownfields at one time before being redeveloped and put back on the tax base.
The city is set to receive another EPA grant worth $300,000 to be used for Phase I assessment along Broadway and Velp Avenue, which has more than 60 potential brownfield sites on its own.
The finding will allow the owners to hire an environmental consultant to assess the scope and scale of environmental cleanup requirements.
